Global Combat Ship으로, 영국 23형 호위함을 대체하기 위한 차세대 호위함 이다. 함명을 도시에서 가져와서 City class 호위함이라고 부르기도 한다.
+ 도입배경
1998년 Future Surface Combatant(FSC) 라는 프로젝트로 시작하여 현재와 같은 모습을 갖추게 되었고, 미래형 수상함 개발에 방향성을 맞춰 개발하기 시작하였다.
2000년 이후 통상적인 함 선형을 선호함에 따라, 대잠전 수행 목적인 C1, 가볍고 다목적임무를 지향하는 C2로 분류하여 개발을 진행하게 되었다.
2015년 획득 대수가 감소하면서 설계(안)이 개선되었고, 대형 호위함(배수량 8,000톤, 전장 150m)으로 최종 개발하는 것으로 결정하였다
+ 주요특징
60일 가량 항해가 가능하며, 7000마일 15노트로 이동, 핵심 승무원 118명이 승선하고, 90명의 병력수송이 가능하다.
대형급 헬기인 CH-47 치누크 이/착함이 가능한 헬기갑판을 함미에 배치하였다.
독특한 컨셉으로 다목적 미션베이가 배치되었는데, TASS(예인형소나)를 탑재하고, UUV 혹은 기뢰제거용 USV 탑재를 임무목적에 따라 다양한 조합으로 배치가 가능하다.
Type 997 Artisan 3D AESA 레이더를 장착하고, CAMM 대공미사일 장착, CODLOG 추진체계 방식을 채택하였다.
대잠탐지에 특화된 Type 26은 탈레스제품인 Type 2050 bow sonar, Type 2087 towed array sonar 장착하였다.
대잠전을 위해 고도로 정숙한 선체와 롤스로이스 특수프로펠러 장착, 스텔스항행모드기능(전기추진모드)이 적용되었다.
Dragonfire 탑재가능성 (CIWS 레이저 무기)을 열어두고 있으며, 현재 개념 이미지 정도만 확인되고 있다.
